Medusa custom my little pony

April 15, 2009

So I was digging around my half finished stuff the other night and came across a head I’d rooted with wire.

I was a little perplexed for a minute until I rememered Medusa my little pony! A fair amount of clay and paint later and here we have her!

In progress

April 12, 2009

Just a quick post with an update of some ponies I’m currently working on. Below we have (from top left) Ayla from Clan of the Cave Bear, The Hulk, weird eye thingy and Tank Girl.

I have some orangey hair coming soon and then I’m starting on bat girl, one of the few super-girls who wasn’t completely annoying.  How come the baddies were always so much cooler?

Off with its head!

April 8, 2009

This is just a quick tutorial with some handy tips about beheading that cute little pony. In my experience generation 1 ponies are a lot harder to chop up than generation 3. Can’t comment on gen 2 as I haven’t used them yet – the big eyed quasi kawaii/alien thing is starting to wear me down a bit though. Gen 1 ponies are made from a harder plastic and in general they were a lot more liberal with the glue. You can always use some 100% acetone to soak some of it away if the cutting is getting tough. (always wear gloves when using acetone, liver damage is not fun).

First things first – give it a little twist. You can be pretty brutal with ponies – they’re very hardy 🙂  It shouldn’t budge but you never know, could always get lucky.

Next give it a good soaking in hot water – you can leave it as long as you like but I normally just run it under for as long as I can stand.

Next is the fun part! Get your crafting blade. It has to be very sharp and you really want a good quality blade – I use x-acto and swear by them but I’ve still managed to snap the odd blade. It doesn’t really need to be said when handling a knife but be careful! Always cut away from yourself and cut slowly – if it slips you have more chance of keeping control of it that way.

Always follow the original neck line of your pony. It makes it easier to reattach and will look much better than just slicing through.

And there you go – a cute but headless pony ready for a re-root.

Boba Fett Custom my little pony

boba fett custom my little pony

I had a custom request about a week ago on etsy for a Boba Fett pony for a husband’s birthday. Here’s what I came up with! I’m a huge star wars fan so this was really fun for me. I tried to keep him authentic whilst still being a pony version. I really enjoyed doing the custom request so here’s hoping I get more.

It has, however, moved all my custom star wars pony wants up the list so be on the look out for a chewbacca and darth vader soon!* A stormtrooper will be along even quicker as he’s almost done, just have to finish off the last of the painting.

* erm by ‘soon’ i probably mean a month or two, lol.

The Grim Reaper MLP – Making of

February 17, 2009

This was my second my little pony customisation. I decided to do the grim reaper, but not just your generic one – this is the my little pony grim reaper. He’s cute, colourful and just a little sassy. He also enjoys a hot cup of coffee in the morning and horse rides on the beach….. possibly.  This is just a general ‘making of’. If you have any specific questions feel free to give me a shout or post a comment 🙂

I’m going to be posting re-rooting, tail and various other tutorials soon!

Keeping the hair out of the way with plait bands. Started the undercoat - work in small areas. You get a much more even tone that way rather than just sloshing paint about.

Use a tiny brush for details like the curves. It normally takes quite a few coats to get a good even coverage. Wait for it to dry in between layers.

Yay! Pony fully painted. The hair here looks awesome, I'm going to get the windswept look going on another one at some point.

I made the reaper man up in sections and smoothed them on to each other. I then carefully sat him on the horse, arranged and smoothed him down some more. To get the cape to look a bit windswept I added wire on the sides.
